Entrepreneurs are commonly great at having ideas, and starting and building great businesses. Most however, are not wired to be effective managers. Yet these owners often eventually work themselves into management positions out of necessity.
When you are managing your business, giving your all, you might have defaulted to a reactive role.
In this state, the idea of growing your business more can seem like… ‘more work.’ I have met plenty of business owners that overworked themselves until they became subconsciously averse to growth.
Again, this is not your fault. The large majority of small business owners and entrepreneurs evolve to living in a ‘reactive’ cycle. Owners and participating stakeholders work downstream of their root issues. They work tirelessly to solve the onslaught of problems that the current keeps washing towards them. Entreprenaurs and business owners reach a tipping point when dealing with the perpetual wave of issues has depleted their passion for the business… they suffer burnout.
I have personally bought dozens of businesses in this situation. The owners just wanted out. While successful, they perceived the business as a problem. I am here to tell you this is an owner’s role problem, not a business problem.
Businesses have varying and distinct lifescycle stages. At each epoch the business changes with new responsibilites. Yet few business owners change for the new roles… very few.
After you have built a profitable business and you reach the third stage of ‘Growth’, a strategic position is required:
New behaviors, different skills, a new mindset and the most effective systems, processes, and formulas available can quickly move the needle to your dreams.
As a business broker, advisor, buyer, and valuation expert for several decades, I was visiting and evaluating businesses on a daily basis.
As you might be familiar, I discovered some business owners were working like crazy for 50, 60 or more hours a week. Then I would visit a business where the owner was working much fewer hours, (25 hours or less a week) and making as much or often much more than their overworked counterparts and often competitors.
I investigated businesses: due diligence on hierachys, employee roles and histories, contractors, processes, books, tax returns, systems, owner behaviors and habits, hiring, delegating, bank records, court records, managment, marketing metrics, data, etc. I compiled libraries of information and data. While my formal education includes business and accounting, I learned that what schools don’t teach you about business is the most important!
I gathered all that information and studied the systems, formulas, and processes these highly successful businesses had in place. I combined some, improved others, and implemented some of my own systems.

For the next two decades I bought and sold privately held businesses and developed and sold franchises at a profit. You could say I ‘flipped’ businesses… businesses of all types. This was not a solo effort, I had assembled a skilled and versatile team including managers, accountants, agents, attorneys, etc.

As you can probably imagine, flipping small businesses is not for the faint of heart or inexperienced. The goal was to at least double the value of each business in 12 months or less. We did this successfully and repeatedly on an unmatched scale.
Increasing the value of a business 2x, 3x or more was not about increasing the assets of the business. We would double or triple cash flow and that had to reflect in profit. While in my twenties I failed at start up businesses more than once, we were 100% successful flipping businesses.
